Shotokan Karate in Kissimmee, Orlando & St. Cloud

Rising Sun Martial Arts is one of the very few Dojos to offer Shotokan Karate training in Kissimmee.

Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. Shotokan is often regarded as a “hard” and “external” martial art because it is taught that way to beginners and color belts to develop strong basic techniques and stances. Initially strength and power are demonstrated instead of slower, more flowing motions. Those who progress to brown and black belt level develop a much more fluid style that incorporates grappling and some aikido-like techniques, which can be found in the black belt katas. Kumite techniques mirror these stances and movements at a basic level, but are less structured, with a focus instead on speed and efficiency.

Gichin Funakoshi laid out the Twenty Precepts of Karate, (or Niju kun) which form the foundations of the art. Within these twenty principles, based heavily on Bushido and Zen, lies the philosophy of Shotokan. The principles allude to notions of humility, respect, compassion, patience, and both an inward and outward calmness. It was Funakoshi's belief that through karate practice and observation of these 20 principles, the karateka would improve their person.

At Rising Sun Martial Arts students learn traditional Shotokan karate-do along with real world self defense. Training consists primarily of Kihon (basic techniques practice), Kata (forms practice), and Kumite (progressive levels of sparring and self defense). We offer classes for kids and adults of all ages:

Junior Class

Ages 6 thru 12 years old. The emphasis here is on learning and developing skills such as listening, following directions, respect, discipline, self-control, and learning to make the right choices. Motor skills, balance, and muscular development are also a major focus as well as personal safety and stranger awareness. Students begin learning the basic skills and techniques of Shotokan karate (kihon, kata, kumite) as well as basic “play ground safe” self-defense techniques. Color stripe belts are awarded according to skill level and upon passing kyu rank testing. Many parents and teachers have complimented on the courtesy and self control our students demonstrate - a testament to both the students and the success of our program.

Senior Class

Students 13 years and older. The Senior Class is more individualized and students learn and advance at their own level and pace. Self defense, self confidence, and self discipline are developed at a higher level. We can help you get in shape, lose weight, increase flexability, reduce stress, and build muscle. In addition to basic kihon, kata, and kumite, a strong emphasis is placed on real self-defense.
